Rolfing Structural Integration was developed by Dr. Ida Rolf and is taught at the Rolf Institute located in Boulder Colorado, Munich Germany, Sao Paulo Brazil, and Tokyo Japan.
Rolfing is the nick name that early students and clients of Ida’s called her work and obviously the name stuck as it is now a registered trademark of the Rolf Institute. Dr. Rolf called her work Structural Integration because it looked at the body as a whole structure rather than individual parts. Much like a house for example you need to have true plumb lines and level horizontals to be sturdy and structurally sound. The same applies to the body. Through injury, illness, stress, lifestyle, or accidents the body’s ‘horizontals’ and plumb lines get misaligned, which can reduce range of motion, cause chronic pain, poor posture, and low energy. Rolfing works to re-establish the ‘horizontals’ and ‘verticals’ to allow the body to be structurally sound again. This is achieved through the use of hands on manipulation of soft tissue, ‘active release’ type work, guided movement, and body education.
Connective tissue or fascia is the main focus of the work in Rolfing. Fascia is the ‘organ of structure’ and is continuous throughout the whole body in an ‘endless web’. Our fascia has amazing plasticity and ability to change quickly, and it is these abilities Rolfers’ work with to release strain and realign the body.
The ‘ten series’ in Rolfing is a process to realign the whole body. A ‘ten series’ is 10 sessions that build on each other and follow a specific formula or ‘recipe’ to address the whole body. Pictures are sometime taken before session one and after session ten, so a person can see how much postural change has taken place, though most people feel the changes.
‘Fix it’ work is available, too if a person is interested in working on one specific issue.
Repetitive strain, whiplash, chronic pain (knee, back, neck, elbow, etc.), poor posture, athletic performance, scoliosis, carpal tunnel, soft tissue injuries, etc. can be addressed by Rolfing.
